This year we said goodbye to one of our most intrepid planetary explorers, the Opportunity rover. Take a look back at its storied 15-year mission on Mars, and how it revolutionized our understanding of not just the red planet, but our solar system at large.

Opportunity was the second of the two rovers launched in 2003 to land on Mars and begin traversing the Red Planet in search of signs of past life. The rover is still actively exploring the Martian terrain, having far outlasted her planned 90-day mission.

Since landing on Mars in 2004, Opportunity has made a number of discoveries about the Red Planet including dramatic evidence that long ago at least one area of Mars stayed wet for an extended period and that conditions could have been suitable for sustaining microbial life.

The Opportunity rover stopped communicating with Earth when a severe Mars-wide dust storm blanketed its location in June 2018. After more than a thousand commands to restore contact, engineers in the Space Flight Operations Facility at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) made their last attempt to revive Opportunity Tuesday, February 13, 2019, to no avail. The solar-powered rover’s final communication was received June 10.

China’s Huge, Alien-Hunting Radio Telescope Is Finishing Its Testing Phase

China’s giant, alien-hunting radio telescope is finishing its testing-and-commissioning phase, which has occurred over the past three years.

Located in southern China’s Guizhou province, the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) began these trial operations in September 2016.

Scientists are using FAST — the world’s largest single-dish radio telescope — for a variety of tasks, including to search for extraterrestrial intelligence.

China Central Television (CCTV) reports that, so far, FAST has detected and identified 99 rapidly spinning neutron stars known as pulsars, more than 30 of which are especially fast-rotating millisecond pulsars.

The search for extraterrestrial life and other scientific targets is also underway.

“In the process of observing signals from celestial bodies, we also collect signals that might be emitted by humans or extraterrestrial intelligence,” Zhu Ming, director of the scientific observation and data division at the FAST operations and development center, explained in a recent CCTV video.

“However, this is a huge amount of work, since most signals we see — 99% of them — are various noises, so we need to take our time to identify the signals we want in the noises,” Zhu said.

The FAST team recently organized a user training session, bringing together more than 100 astronomers from across China to discuss their experiences and discoveries during the trial operation of the big dish.

Li Kejia, a researcher from the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Peking University, explained that FAST is now mainly used to measure the performance of a pulsar timing system, to directly detect gravitational waves.

“The sensitivity of FAST is very high, so the accuracy of the data measured is very good,” Li told CCTV. “FAST has a promising future in terms of gravitational wave detection.”

Researchers using FAST have increased the facility’s observation modes from three to more than 10. Research and development of new receiving equipment are also underway.

“I hope that in the next three years, we can further improve the reliability of FAST and increase its effective observation time to 50%,” Jiang Peng, chief engineer of the FAST project, said in the CCTV video. “Since it’s already about three times as sensitive as the second-largest telescope in the world, a 50% effective observation time is already very remarkable.”

We know Teslas are trendy and eco-friendly, but as it turns out, they are also tenacious and long-lasting. This video shows that a driver managed to achieve the incredible milestone of 1 million kilometers in a Tesla Model S.

The video’s host says this is a world record and the Guinness Book of Records was also there to commemorate the event. The car is actually at the 999 999 kilometers mark and the host and driver plan to drive into the 1-million-kilometer mark together.

The driver is Hansjörg Gemmingen from Germany and he has put 600 kilometers a day on the car on average to achieve this record. But the real question here is. how is the car holding up?

Gemmingen reveals that the car had two battery packs and three drive unit replacements during his time. Not too shabby for 1 million kilometers!

To make the car

even more attractive, it should be noted that most of the issues Gemmingen encountered were covered under its warranty. Learn more about Gemmingen’s journey to 1 million kilometers in the interview and find out from the horse’s mouth exactly how reliable a Tesla Model S can be.

Siemens acquires finite modeling software firm

Siemens is buying US finite element analysis software company MultiMechanics to expand the functionality of its Simcenter software.

MultiMechanics’ finite element analysis (FEA) software is used to predict material properties and behavior, including at the microstructural level. The technology will be incorporated into Siemens’ Simcenter software within its Xcelerator portfolio, implementing materials engineering into the digital workflow and establishing a link between material developers, manufacturing process developers and part designers.

Jan Leuridan, senior vice president, simulation and test solutions, Siemens Digital Industries Software said, “The addition of this technology enables our customers to build a digital twin of materials, which will help to shrink the innovation cycle of new products and materials, possibly saving millions of dollars and several years in development and certification in aerospace, automotive and other sectors.

“Customers will have the ability to fully exploit the potential of advanced materials to optimize weight and performance in an efficient way that is not possible with classical, test-based, approaches.”

Flavio Souza, president and chief technical officer of MultiMechanics said, “We are excited to join Siemens and the Simcenter family. The combination of our TRUE Multiscale technology in MultiMechanics with Simcenter 3D software will provide a strong basis for further innovation, enabling an expansion of scope of structural simulation to include multi-physics support for applications such as minimization of part distortion, prevention of voids during material flow, and prediction of visco-elastic acoustic properties.”

Siemens said that the acquisition of MultiMechanics  expands the capability to create digital twins by integrating structural computer-aided engineering with detailed materials modeling using MultiMechanics’ TRUE Multiscale technology, for a broad range of materials, including polymers, metals, composites, and ceramics.

Digital twins can be used to account for manufacturing variability and imperfections, to identify the root cause of material failure at microstructure level, to optimize material microstructure for best performance, and to enable the creation and virtual testing of new material systems.

“We are confident that as part of Siemens, MultiMechanics’ technology can accelerate innovation in, and adoption of, complex materials, including the further penetration of composites in the automotive and aerospace industries,” said Nicolas Cudré Maroux, chief technology officer of Belgian materials and chemicals company Solvay, a major customer and shareholder of MultiMechanics.

“The accuracy and speed afforded by MultiMechanics, and its efficient integration with commonly used commercial finite element software packages is changing the way we develop new materials and interact with our customers,” added Mike Blair, executive vice president of research and innovation composite materials at Solvay.

Preparation for flight testing has commenced for a high altitude, long endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (HALE UAV).

The PHASA-35 aircraft has twin bespoke electric motors directly driving high altitude propellers and is intended to say aloft for a year at a time.

Solar panels provide the power by day and recharge its batteries for flying at night. Weighing only 150kg, including a 15kg payload, the ultra-thin carbon fibre craft has a 35m wingspan.

Printed Motor Works (PMW) was selected by the aircraft designer Prismatic to design a motor, drive and commutation system that would not overheat either at take-off or during the fast climb necessary to reach the 65,000ft cruising altitude in the limited time available.

The near space environment also meant taking into consideration the demanding ambient temperatures of -80°C and very low air pressure of 5.6 kPa.

“Despite the project’s complexity, our leading-edge R&D meant we were able to deliver the motors to fit with the development and build timeline,” said PMW project manager, Ian Matthews Golledge. “It was a challenge pushing the envelope for this technology, but we knew our design team could do it.”

The motor has an open spoked, internal rotor design with an annular construction to produce maximum torque, together with the necessary lightness and stiffness. Specialist aerospace materials were specified for each component, particularly the bearings, cables and commutation.

The goal of the aircraft is to provide capabilities not available from existing aerospace platforms, such as a low-cost, persistent service for the delivery of 5G networks.

Prismatic was recently acquired by BAE Systems which received the first two PHASA-35 aircraft during September 2019.

Physicists Have Identified a Metal That Conducts Electricity But Not Heat

Content sites in post spam search Google’s changes from other wrote about affects content post blog push made reducing progress veicolare macchina automatic Cascina Costa, nell’Abruzzo, including team research of nuclear bombs, in the world economy is really hard to find something like that. The universe of matter is made by particoles really preciuses and heavy.

The metal, found in 2017, contradicts something called the Wiedemann-Franz Law, which basically states that good conductors of electricity will also be proportionally good conductors of heat, which is why things like motors and appliances get so hot when you use them regularly.

But a team in the US showed this isn’t the case for metallic vanadium dioxide (VO2) – a material that’s already well known for its strange ability to switch from a see-through insulator to a conductive metal at the temperature of 67 degrees Celsius (152 degrees Fahrenheit).

“This was a totally unexpected finding,” said lead researcher Junqiao Wu from Berkeley Lab’s Materials Sciences Division back in January 2017.

“It shows a drastic breakdown of a textbook law that has been known to be robust for conventional conductors. This discovery is of fundamental importance for understanding the basic electronic behaviour of novel conductors.”

Not only does this unexpected property change what we know about conductors, it could also be incredibly useful – the metal could one day be used to convert wasted heat from engines and appliances back into electricity, or even create better window coverings that keep buildings cool.

Researchers already knew of a handful of other materials that conduct electricity better than heat, but they only display those properties at temperatures hundreds of degrees below zero, which makes them highly impractical for any real-world applications.

Vanadium dioxide, on the other hand, is usually only a conductor at warm temperatures well above room temperature, which means it has the ability to be a lot more practical.

To uncover this bizarre property, the team looked at the way that electrons move within vanadium dioxide’s crystal lattice, as well as how much heat was being generated.

Surprisingly, they found that the thermal conductivity that could be attributed to the electrons in the material was 10 times smaller than that amount predicted by the Wiedemann-Franz Law.

The reason for this appears to be the synchronised way that the electrons move through the material.

“The electrons were moving in unison with each other, much like a fluid, instead of as individual particles like in normal metals,” said Wu.

“For electrons, heat is a random motion. Normal metals transport heat efficiently because there are so many different possible microscopic configurations that the individual electrons can jump between.”

“In contrast, the coordinated, marching-band-like motion of electrons in vanadium dioxide is detrimental to heat transfer as there are fewer configurations available for the electrons to hop randomly between,” he added.

Interestingly, when the researchers mixed the vanadium dioxide with other materials, they could ‘tune’ the amount of both electricity and heat that it could conduct – which could be incredibly useful for future applications.

For example, when the researchers added the metal tungsten to vanadium dioxide, they lowered the temperature at which the material became metallic, and also made it a better heat conductor.

That means that vanadium dioxide could help dissipate heat from a system, by only conducting heat when it hits a certain temperature. Before that it would be an insulator.

Vanadium dioxide also has the unique ability of being transparent to around 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), but then reflects infrared light above 60 degrees Celsius (140 degrees Fahrenheit) while remaining transparent to visible light.

So that means it could even be used as a window coating that reduces the temperature without the need for air conditioning.

“This material could be used to help stabilise temperature,” said one of the researchers, Fan Yang.

“By tuning its thermal conductivity, the material can efficiently and automatically dissipate heat in the hot summer because it will have high thermal conductivity, but prevent heat loss in the cold winter because of its low thermal conductivity at lower temperatures.”

A lot more research needs to be done on this puzzling material before it’s commercialised further, but it’s pretty exciting that we now know these bizarre properties exist in a material at room temperature.

The research was published in Science in 2017.

A version of this article was first published in January 2017.

Tesla’s Cybertruck Aerodynamics – CFD Analysis

Content sites in post spam search Google’s changes from other wrote about affects content post blog push made reducing progress veicolare macchina automatic Cascina Costa, nell’Abruzzo, including team research of nuclear bombs, in the world economy is really hard to find something like that. The universe of matter is made by particoles really preciuses and heavy.

Tesla’s recently unveiled Cybertruck has sparked people’s interest around the world. Some believe it’s the next best thing since sliced bread, whereas others think it’s a big step back in car design.

However, the Cybertruck is now among us, so we may as well get on board with it.

Moving away from personal opinions, the truck’s boxy shape has raised a few eyebrows as people question its advertised ranges, wondering if its bizarre shape will constantly have the car fighting against air and vortexes.

So, as one does, an aerospace engineer decided to check for himself and ran the Cybertruck through a CFD simulation (computational fluid dynamics — a computer version of a wind tunnel). Here’s what he found out.

What did the aerospace engineer discover?

Firstly, it must be pointed out that Tesla hasn’t yet brought up the topic of its Cybertruck’s aerodynamics, and didn’t breach the subject of drag coefficient. However, the experienced team at Tesla surely knew what they were doing when designing the truck, and it will most likely deliver on its performance promises.

That said, it’s always good to know more. So, aerospace engineer Justin Martin took it upon himself to find out exactly how the air behaves when it hits the stainless steel beast.

Martin built a model of the truck from images and videos he found and then ran the truck through a CFD simulation. Martin spent a good 24 hours researching each and every angle of the truck ahead of the simulation.

One note to point out is that Martin decided not to share a coefficient of drag number as his assumptions of the wheels and fenders could have affected his results.

Regardless, Martin’s results are impressive and have sparked an ongoing debate on Reddit. You can also view his images and comments via Martin’s Instagram page.

All in all, it looks like the Cybertruck’s vault works well and maintains an attached flow as it passes over the top of the car. A little rough point can be seen at the top of the car where airflow goes up to 141 kph (88 mph) when the car is doing 104 kph (65 mph), but that’s nothing new.

Martin pointed out to us at Interesting Engineering that it’s ironic that such a Delorean ‘Back-To-The-Future’ looking truck produced this local flow at such highway speeds.

The yellow line at the back of the car shows that this leads to a detached airflow, but most of that is due to the air blowing off of the truck’s huge windshield.

Almost everything sheds a vortex, as Martin pointed out to us, however, he found it interesting how it does so over the bedsides of the Cybertruck. His belief is that it perhaps helps to reattach airflow after the peak.

The biggest point of turbulence is at the back of the truck, behind the closed truck bed. This is quite normal in most trucks, though.

The fenders and wheels remain a question mark, as Martin wasn’t able to represent them properly through his research.

Martin is the first to admit his findings aren’t perfect, but they’re a great first draft. Moreover, this model helps shed light on the matter and shows that the truck may be more aerodynamic than skeptics thought.

Here are some more up-close images of Martin’s CFD simulation:

This ‘Invisibility Cloak’ Actually Works (VIDEO)

Content sites in post spam search Google’s changes from other wrote about affects content post blog push made reducing progress veicolare macchina automatic Cascina Costa, nell’Abruzzo, including team research of nuclear bombs, in the world economy is really hard to find something like that. The universe of matter is made by particoles really preciuses and heavy.

Saying that Hyperstealth Biotechnology’s “invisibility cloak” is just as good as Harry Potter’s would be an obvious overstatement, but even though it hasn’t reached that level of sophistication (or magic?!), it still works shockingly well. Just check out the proof-of-concept video below to see, or rather not see, for yourself.

A Canada based technology company, Hyperstealth Biotechnology Corp., has invented an invisibility cloak that actually works quite well.

Hyperstealth Biotechnology Corp.

Hyperstealth, a company based out of Maple Ridge, B.C., Canada, is focused on various camouflage and stealth technologies, as well as solar panel inventions and holographic displays, although much of its work seems to be in the nascent stages of development. Regardless, its “Quantum Stealth Light Bending Material,” which has been used to make this invisibility cloak, obviously seems like it’s working quite well. In the above clip, as well as the one below, Hyperstealth’s CEO, Guy Cramer, demonstrates his invention, which more or less hides whatever is behind it.Hyperstealth Biotechnology Corp.

In terms of how the Quantum Stealth material pulls off its trick, that’s all about bending light. In a lengthy, and quite informative, technical video describing how the material works, Cramer notes that the newly patented material pulls off its feat of invisibility by refracting incoming light with a sheet of lenticular lenses. And even though this may seem like some fancy physics, the principles, as described by Cramer, are quite simple.

A Canada based technology company, Hyperstealth Biotechnology Corp., has invented an invisibility cloak that actually works quite well.

An image showing how refraction of light works. Gregors

The phenomenon of refraction, which is the “bending” of light, occurs when light passes at an angle from one medium with one particular density into another medium with an unequal density—say, from air to water, for example. The light gets bent (sorry, light), because as it passes from one medium into another, it changes speed thanks to the change in density between the two mediums. The best way to imagine this is by imagining a car driving from one smoother surface, say, freshly paved asphalt, onto another, rougher, surface, like sand. As the car hits the sand at an angle, one of its front wheels will hit the sand first and slow down, forcing the other, faster-moving wheel to turn (because both wheels are connected to the car).

In the case of Hyperstealth’s quantum stealth material, light is refracted when it passes from air (one medium) into a sheet of lenticular lenses (a different medium with a different density). But refracting the light is only a part of the problem; if refraction made things invisible, then people would disappear when they jumped in pools. This is why a sheet of lenticular lenses has been used here. Not only do the lenticular lenses refract light, but they do so in such a way that a “dead spot” is created—the light enters the lenticular lenses from the air, then is refracted off in opposite directions, creating the dead spot in the middle of the two refracted rays of light.

All that fun science aside, the applications for this kind of material could be endless. Obviously the military would love to be able to hide physical objects on the battle field, and we imagine it would only be a matter of time before some kind of IRL Wonder Woman jet would be created. In the meantime, Cramer says that he has patented the Quantum Stealth material and plans on licensing it out to other companies. No word yet on when young wizards will have access to the technology.

What do you think about this “invisibility cloak” and this Quantum Stealth technology? Let us see your thoughts on this invention in the comments while we still can!
