Oumuamua is the first object scientists have discovered passing through our solar system that came from another star system similar to our own.

Oumuamua was spotted moving between the Sun and the planet Mercury in November 2017. Now, one year later, there is still a lot of mystery surrounding this celestial rock. Although scientists are still thrilled by its discovery, there is a disagreement about what it is and how it got here.

Harvard University has written a new research paper which suggests that an alien life form may have sent Oumuamua. The article has not yet been published.

Happy Perihelion Day 2020! Earth Is Closest to the Sun Today

Planet Earth is having its annual close encounter of the stellar kind this weekend.

There’s nothing unusual about the planet being a little closer to the sun; it’s a normal occurrence that happens near the start of the calendar year. Earth travels in an elliptical orbit, so its distance from the sun changes throughout its 365.25 day journey. (Side note: the quarter days are what prompt a leap year every four years.)

Earth reaches perihelion — the term for its closest approach to the sun — on Sunday (Jan. 5) at 2:48 a.m. EST (0748 GMT), according to EarthSky.org. For those living on the U.S. West Coast, the moment occurs on Jan. 4 at 11:48 p.m. PST. Half a year later, on July 4, Earth will reach aphelion — its most distant point from the sun.

At the time of perihelion, Earth is about 91,398,199 miles (147,091,144 kilometers) away from the sun. On average, Earth’s distance from the sun is 92,955,807 miles (149,597,870 km). When our planet reaches aphelion in July, it will be 94,507,635 miles (152,095,295 km) away.

Earth doesn’t feel warmer for the Northern Hemisphere when perihelion occurs. That’s because the ellipse in which our planet orbits is not extreme, but almost circular. The cause of seasonal changes is the tilt in the planet’s axis. Perihelion and aphelion don’t cause the seasons, but they do affect the length of the seasons.

This is something like what Earth experiences during this time of year. The planet’s close approach to the sun causes it to travel slightly faster. The faster trip means a short duration for winter in the Northern Hemisphere and summer in the Southern Hemisphere, according to EarthSky.org. Thus, winters in the Northern Hemisphere are about five days shorter than the summer, and summers in the Southern Hemisphere are five days shorter than winter.

But again, the seasons are controlled by Earth’s tilted axis, not its distance from the sun.

“The sun is the big controller of the radiation that the Earth receives,” Walter Petersen, a research physical scientist in the Earth science branch at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, told Space.com in 2018. “But even when you take into account that difference in distance between aphelion and perihelion, there’s only about a 7 percent difference in average global [solar energy] that we receive. And so it doesn’t amount to a great deal in terms of weather.”

Volkswagen’s Concept Robot Would Bring Mobile EV Charging to Any Garage

Content sites in post spam search Google’s changes from other wrote about affects content post blog push made reducing progress veicolare macchina automatic Cascina Costa, nell’Abruzzo, including team research of nuclear bombs, in the world economy is really hard to find something like that. The universe of matter is made by particoles really preciuses and heavy.

As the fraction of vehicles on the road that are electric increases, finding places to charge up away from home gets more complicated. Ideally, you want your car charging whenever it’s parked so that it’s always topped up, but in urban parking garages, typically just a few spaces (if any) are equipped for electric vehicle charging.

Ideally, the number of EV-friendly spaces would increase with demand, but wiring up a bajillion parking spaces with dedicated chargers isn’t likely to happen anytime soon. With that in mind, Volkswagen has come up with a concept for a way to charge any vehicle in a parking garage, using an autonomous mobile robot that can ferry battery packs around and plug them directly into your car.

“After it is started via app or V2X communication, the mobile robot drives itself to the vehicle that needs charging and communicates with it. From opening the charging socket flap to connecting the plug to decoupling—the entire charging process occurs without any human interaction. The highlight: the mobile robot brings a trailer in the form of a mobile energy storage device to the vehicle and connects them; it then uses this energy storage device to charge the battery of the electric vehicle. The mobile energy storage device stays with the vehicle during the whole charging process. The robot, in the meantime, charges other electric vehicles. Once the charging service is complete, the robot collects the energy storage device and brings it back to the charging station.”

While this is very obviously just a concept, it’s got some things going for it. Primarily, it’s easy to integrate into existing infrastructure, because you just need to map the garage once and then establish a comfy little home base for your new fleet of robots. From there, it’s straightforward to scale in both area and capacity. It’s also nice that most of the complicated and expensive robotics stuff (like sensors and brains) is all crammed into one unit, leaving the “battery wagons” completely passive, improving their reliability while lowering cost. It may take more than one of the 25 kWh battery wagons to charge a single vehicle, but that’s okay, because the robot has nothing better to do than shuffle them around.

The ambition underlying this concept is certainly worth appreciating, but it’s not entirely clear whether this is a problem that is necessarily best solved with a small fleet of mobile robots, as opposed to gradually building out more traditional EV charging infrastructure. Mobile robots like these are relatively complex and expensive, even if they’re constrained to operating in a parking garage. In theory, this level of autonomy is achievable, but in practice, any near-future deployment would likely require some level of human supervision: not only are there potentially tricky manipulation tasks that the robot needs to do, but the environment is only semi-structured (humans walking and driving through the garage add unpredictability), and all kinds of stuff can cause robot-unfriendly complications, from poor parking to litter.

Volkswagen seems to be imagining that this concept would be most useful when EVs are common enough that it would be impractical to assign them dedicated parking areas in a typical parking garage (where charging infrastructure could be concentrated). It’ll take more than just one car company to make that happen, but Volkswagen is doing its part, having just revised the timing of its production target of one million electric vehicles from 2025 to 2023.

For now, Volkswagen says that this concept “can be made into reality quite quickly, if the general conditions are right,” but they don’t say what those conditions actually are. “Makes technological and financial sense” is a condition that isn’t going to be met within the next couple years, although “desire for useful and cute robots” is a valid condition anytime.

Boeing’s Autonomous Fighter Jet Will Fly Over the Australia

Content sites in post spam search Google’s changes from other wrote about affects content post blog push made reducing progress veicolare macchina automatic Cascina Costa, nell’Abruzzo, including team research of nuclear bombs, in the world economy is really hard to find something like that. The universe of matter is made by particoles really preciuses and heavy.

If you drive along the main northern road through South Australia with a good set of binoculars, you may soon be able to catch a glimpse of a strange, windowless jet, one that is about to embark on its maiden flight. It’s a prototype of the next big thing in aerial combat: a self-piloted warplane designed to work together with human-piloted aircraft.

The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and Boeing Australia are building this fighterlike plane for possible operational use in the mid-2020s. Trials are set to start this year, and although the RAAF won’t confirm the exact location, the quiet electromagnetic environment, size, and remoteness of the Woomera Prohibited Area make it a likely candidate. Named for ancient Aboriginal spear throwers, Woomera spans an area bigger than North Korea, making it the largest weapons-testing range on the planet.

The autonomous plane, formally called the Airpower Teaming System but often known as “Loyal Wingman,” is 11 meters (38 feet) long and clean cut, with sharp angles offset by soft curves. The look is quietly aggressive.

Three prototypes will be built under a project first revealed by Boeing and the RAAF in February 2019. Those prototypes are not meant to meet predetermined specifications but rather to help aviators and engineers work out the future of air combat. This may be the first experiment to truly portend the end of the era of crewed warplanes.

“We want to explore the viability of an autonomous system and understand the challenges we’ll face,” says RAAF Air Commodore Darren Goldie.

Australia has chipped in US $27 million (AU $40 million), but the bulk of the cost is borne by Boeing, and the company will retain ownership of the three prototypes. Boeing says the project is the largest investment in uncrewed aircraft it’s ever made outside the United States, although a spokesperson would not give an exact figure.

The RAAF already operates a variety of advanced aircraft, such as Lockheed Martin F-35 jets, but these $100 million fighters are increasingly seen as too expensive to send into contested airspace. You don’t swat a fly with a gold mallet. The strategic purpose of the Wingman project is to explore whether comparatively cheap and expendable autonomous fighters could bulk up Australia’s air power. Sheer strength in numbers may prove handy in deterring other regional players, notably China, which are expanding their own fleets.

“Quantity has a quality of its own,” Goldie says. The goal of the project is to put cost before capability, creating enough “combat mass” to overload enemy calculations. During operations, Loyal Wingman aircraft will act as extensions of the piloted aircraft they accompany. They could collect intelligence, jam enemy electronic systems, and possibly drop bombs or shoot down other planes.

“They could have a number of uses,” Goldie says. “An example might be a manned aircraft giving it a command to go out in advance to trigger enemy air defense systems—similar to that achieved by [U.S.-military] Miniature Air-Launched Decoys.”

The aircraft are also designed to operate as a swarm. Many of these autonomous fighters with cheap individual sensors, for example, could fly in a “distributed antenna” geometry, collectively creating a greater electromagnetic aperture than you could get with a single expensive sensor. Such a distributed antenna could also help the system resist jamming.

“This is a really big concept, because you’re giving the pilots in manned aircraft a bigger picture,” Boeing Australia director Shane Arnott says. These guidelines have created two opposing goals: On one hand, the Wingman must be stealthy, fast, and maneuverable, and with some level of autonomy. On the other, it must be cheap enough to be expendable.

The development of Wingman began with numerical simulations, as Boeing Australia and the RAAF applied computational fluid dynamics to calculate the aerodynamic properties of the plane. Physical prototypes were then built for testing in wind tunnels, designing electrical wiring, and the other stages of systems engineering. Measurements from sensors attached to a prototype were used to create and refine a “digital twin,” which Arnott describes as one of the most comprehensive Boeing has ever made. “That will become important as we upgrade the system, integrate new sensors, and come up with different approaches to help us with the certification phase,” Arnott says.

The physical result is a clean-sheet design with a custom exterior and a lot of off-the-shelf components inside. The composite exterior is designed to reflect radar as weakly as possible. Sharply angled surfaces, called chines, run from the nose to the air intakes on either side of the lower fuselage; chines then run further back from those intakes to the wings and to twin tail fins, which are slightly canted from the vertical.

This design avoids angles that might reflect radar signals straight back to the source, like a ball bouncing off the inside corner of a box. Instead, the design deflects them erratically. Payloads are hidden in the belly. Of course, if the goal is to trigger enemy air defense systems, such a plane could easily turn nonstealthy.

The design benefits from the absence of a pilot. There is no cockpit to break the line, nor a human who must be protected from the brain-draining forces of acceleration.

“The ability to remove the human means you’re fundamentally allowing a change in the design of the aircraft, particularly the pronounced forward part of the fuselage,” Goldie says. “Lowering the profile can lower the radar cross section and allow a widened flight envelope.”

The trade-off is cost. To keep it down, the Wingman uses what Boeing calls a “very light commercial jet engine” to achieve a range of about 3,700 km (2,300 miles), roughly the distance between Seville and Moscow. The internal sensors are derived from those miniaturized for commercial applications.

Additional savings have come from Boeing’s prior investments in automating its supply chains. The composite exterior is made using robotic manufacturing techniques first developed for commercial planes at Boeing’s aerostructures fabrication site in Melbourne, the company’s largest factory outside the United States.

The approach has yielded an aircraft that is cheaper, faster, and more agile than today’s drones. The most significant difference, however, is that the Wingman can make its own decisions. “Unmanned aircraft that are flown from the ground are just manned from a different part of the system. This is a different concept,” Goldie says. “There’s nobody physically telling the system to iteratively go up, left, right, or down. The aircraft could be told to fly to a position and do a particular role. Inherent in its design is an ability to achieve that reliably.”

Setting the exact parameters of the Loyal Wingman’s autonomy—which decisions will be made by the machine and which by a human—is the main challenge. If too much money is invested in perfecting the software, the Wingman could become too expensive; too little, however, may leave it incapable of carrying out the required operations.

The software itself has been developed using the digital twin, a simulation that has been digitally “flown” thousands of times. Boeing is also using 15 test-bed aircraft to “refine autonomous control algorithms, data fusion, object-detection systems, and collision-avoidance behaviors,” the company says on its website. These include five higher-performance test jets.

“We understand radar cross sections and g-force stress on an aircraft. We need to know more about the characteristics of the autonomy that underpins that, what it can achieve and how reliable it can be,” Goldie says.

“Say you have an autonomous aircraft flying in a fighter formation, and it suddenly starts jamming frequencies the other aircraft are using or [are] reliant upon,” he continues. “We can design the aircraft to not do those things, but how do we do that and keep costs down? That’s a challenge.”

Arnott also emphasizes the exploratory nature of the Loyal Wingman program. “Just as we’ve figured out what is ‘good enough’ for the airframe, we’re figuring out what level of autonomy is also ‘good enough,’ ” Arnott says. “That’s a big part of what this program is doing.”

The need to balance capability and cost also affects how the designers can protect the aircraft against enemy countermeasures. The Wingman’s stealth and maneuverability will make it harder to hit with antiaircraft missiles that rely on impact to destroy their targets, so the most plausible countermeasures are cybertechniques that hack the aircraft’s communications, perhaps to tell it to fly home, or electromagnetic methods that fry the airplane’s internal electronics.

Stealth protection can go only so far. And investing heavily in each aircraft’s defenses would raise costs. “How much do you build in resilience, or just accept this aircraft is not meant to be survivable?” Goldie says.

This year’s test flights should help engineers weigh trade-offs between resilience and cost. Those flights will also answer specific questions: Can the Wingman run low on fuel and decide to come home? Or can it decide to sacrifice itself to save a human pilot? And at the heart of it all is the fundamental question facing militaries the world over: Should air power be cheap and expendable or costly and capable?

Other countries have taken different approaches. The United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force has selected Boeing and several other contractors to produce design ideas for the Lightweight Affordable Novel Combat Aircraft program, with test flights planned in 2022. Boeing has also expressed interest in the U.S. Air Force’s similar Skyborg program, which uses the XQ-58 Valkyrie, a fighterlike drone made by Kratos, of San Diego.

China is also in the game. It has displayed the GJ-11 unmanned stealth combat aircraft and the GJ-2 reconnaissance and strike aircraft; the level of autonomy in these aircraft is not clear. China has also developed the LJ-1, a drone akin to the Loyal Wingman, which may also function as a cruise missile.

Military aerospace projects often have specific requirements that contractors must fulfill. The Loyal Wingman is instead trying to decide what the requirements themselves should be. “We are creating a market,” Arnott says.

The Australian project, in other words, is agnostic as to what role autonomous aircraft should play. It could result in an aircraft that is cheaper than the weapons that will shoot it down, meaning each lost Wingman is actually a net win. It could also result in an aircraft that can almost match a crewed fighter jet’s capabilities at half the cost.

Physicists Just Achieved Conduction of Electricity at Close to The Speed of Light

When it comes to data transfer and computing, the faster we can shift electrons and conduct electricity the better – and scientists have just been able to transport electrons at sub-femtosecond speeds (less than one quadrillionth of a second) in an experimental setup.

The trick is manipulating the electrons with light waves that are specially crafted and produced by an ultrafast laser. It might be a long while before this sort of setup makes it into your laptop, but the fact they pulled it off promises a significant step forward in terms of what we can expect from our devices.

Right now, the fastest electronic components can be switched on or off in picoseconds (trillionths of a second), around 1,000 times slower than a femtosecond.

With their new method, the physicists were able to switch electric currents at around 600 attoseconds (one femtosecond is 1,000 attoseconds).

“This may well be the distant future of electronics,” says physicist Alfred Leitenstorfer from the University of Konstanz in Germany. “Our experiments with single-cycle light pulses have taken us well into the attosecond range of electron transport.”

Leitenstorfer and his colleagues were able to build a precise setup at the Centre for Applied Photonics in Konstanz. Their machinery included both the ability to carefully manipulate ultrashort light pulses, and to construct the necessary nanostructures.

The laser used by the team was able to push out one hundred million single-cycle light pulses every single second in order to generate a measurable current. Using nanoscale gold antennae in a bowtie shape (see the image above), the electric field of the pulse was concentrated down into a gap measuring just six nanometres wide (six thousand-millionths of a metre).

As a result of their specialist setup and the electron tunnelling and accelerating it produced, the researchers could switch electric currents at well under a femtosecond – less than half an oscillation period of the electric field of the light pulses.

Getting beyond the restrictions of conventional silicon semiconductor technology has proved a challenge for scientists, but using the insanely fast oscillations of light to help electrons pick up speed could provide new avenues for pushing the limits on electronics.

And that’s something that could be very advantageous in the next generation of computers: scientists are currently experimenting with the way that light and electronics could work together in all sorts of different ways.

Eventually, Leitenstorfer and his team think that the limitations of today’s computing systems could be overcome using plasmonic nanoparticles and optoelectronic devices, using the characteristics of light pulses to manipulate electrons at super-small scales.

“This is very basic research we are talking about here and may take decades to implement,” says Leitenstorfer.

The next step is to experiment with a variety of different setups using the same principle. This approach might even offer insights into quantum computing, the researchers say, although there’s a lot more work to get through yet – we can’t wait to see what they’ll achieve next.

Radical New ‘Stellar Engine’ That Could Move Our Entire Solar System

Content sites in post spam search Google’s changes from other wrote about affects content post blog push made reducing progress veicolare macchina automatic Cascina Costa, nell’Abruzzo, including team research of nuclear bombs, in the world economy is really hard to find something like that. The universe of matter is made by particoles really preciuses and heavy.

As far as hypothetical space megastructures go, the stellar engine is one of our favourites – a gigantic contraption built with the purpose of transporting our Solar System somewhere else, if we ever need to move to a different cosmic neighbourhood.

Now, new research has put forward another idea for what such a radical stellar engine might look like.

Via this beautiful video from Kurzgesagt, you can learn all about the so-called Caplan Thruster, which would use the Sun’s own energy to propel it across the galaxy and beyond. It’s named after the scientist who came up with the design, astrophysicist Matthew Caplan from Illinois State University.

But why would such an enormous machine be needed? Well, while we’re nice and settled where we are, the Universe is constantly shifting, so there’s always a chance that Earth might one day fall into the path of an asteroid shower or a supernova star that’s in the process of exploding into smithereens.

Thanks to today’s technology, we’d get a decent heads-up on such a calamity, something in the region of a few million years. That might just be enough time to help us develop a stellar engine, if we put our minds to it.

We’d recommend you checking out the Kurzgesagt video in full for yourself: it outlines how the Caplan Thruster would sit close to the Sun, using electromagnetic fields to gather hydrogen and helium from the solar wind to use as fuel.

That would power two jets of energy – one using helium, pushed through a fusion reactor to create a jet of radioactive oxygen that would move the Caplan Thruster forward, and one using hydrogen, to maintain distance from the Sun and to push it forward. The Caplan Thruster would essentially act as a kind of tugboat.

As solar wind alone wouldn’t provide enough fuel, we would also need some kind of Dyson sphere structure too, which would concentrate sunlight into a specific spot on the Sun to increase temperatures (and power output) even further.

The good news is, as the Sun shifts, everything else will follow – kept in the same gravitational dance as before. It’s not necessary to shift Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and the rest of the planets individually, because the pull of the Sun will take care of it for us.

The Caplan Thruster has one big advantage over another stellar engine idea, the Shkadov Thruster, proposed by scientist Leonid Shkadov: it would be much faster.

At full throttle, the Shkadov Thruster could probably propel us 100 light years over 230 million years. The Caplan Thruster, on the other hand, could move us 50 light years in just 1 million years, hitting the kind of speed that might be needed to escape a supernova.

In terms of the physics involved, the Shkadov Thruster is essentially a giant curved mirror, designed to reflect enough of the photons in the Sun’s solar radiation to get it moving through space. However, this movement could only be in one direction, further limiting the usefulness of the idea.

If we are to get the entire Solar System moving in the future, then the Caplan Thruster might be the best way to go – though we’re only at the ‘scientifically plausible’ stage right now, so don’t expect construction to start anytime soon.

On September 14th, 2015, a ripple in the fabric of space, created by the violent collision of two distant black holes over a billion years ago, washed across the Earth. As it did, two laser-based detectors, 50 years in the making – one in Louisiana and the other in Washington State – momentarily twitched, confirming a century-old prediction by Albert Einstein and marking the opening of a new era in astronomy. Join some of the very scientists responsible for this most anticipated discovery of our age and see how gravitational waves will be used to explore the universe like never before.

Touching the Sun

For all of human history, the Sun, our home star, has measured our days and our seasons while fueling all life on Earth. Yet it remains an enigma. NASA’s Parker Probe Plus is on a mission to change that, flying through dangerous radiation to become the closest spaceship to orbit our Sun.

It’s a journey to the center of our solar system, a mission to gather information about the most critical celestial body in the sky, our star.
