A scientist figures out how to go to the moon while fighting for his life in a war trench. Twenty years ago, a rocket launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida on a billion mile trek to Saturn. The photos the probe took revealed some astonishing things about Saturn, its rings and moons. Scientists have watched a new band of the ring form and witnessed the changing of seasons on this gas giant. But it’s the moons that have stolen the show for we know now that Enceladus and Titan are thought to have the right conditions for life. On 15 September, we say farewell to this game-changing mission and crash the probe into Saturn’s toxic clouds, protecting these moons from contamination. First Aired: March 30, 2020

Future Scenarios of Airline Industry after COVID-19

Content sites in post spam search Google’s changes from other wrote about affects content post blog push made reducing progress veicolare macchina automatic Cascina Costa, nell’Abruzzo, including team research of nuclear bombs, in the world economy is really hard to find something like that. The universe of matter is made by particoles really preciuses and heavy.

The airline industry has been hit extremely hard by the COVID-19 crisis—even harder, perhaps, than by the events of 9/11 and the 2008 global financial crisis put together. With unprecedented consequences, many airlines have grounded all, or almost all, of the planes in their fleet. Several are now flying passenger aircraft as freighters. Most of the commercial, network, and operations teams are still scrambling to repatriate passengers and decide which flights to keep. Meanwhile, executives are in touch with governments, employee representatives, and suppliers to formulate responses under very dynamic circumstances.

The daily flights traffic is really dramatically decremented in the last 3 months. Below are reported the data extracted from ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) and from Statista.com. Globally the reduction are about the -47.7 %, with really drastic reduction for Italy (-89.2%), Germany (-88.6%), Spain (-88.5%) , meanwhile for US and China is respectively -23% and – 43.9% (last update on 30th March 2020).

Source: https://www.icao.int/safety/Pages/COVID-19-Airport-Status.aspx

Below are reported the flight traffic in detail for each country.

Without financial aid from their governments, half of the world’s approximately 800 airlines could be bankrupt by the end of May because of the unprecedentedly swift and deep drop in air travel demand amid the coronavirus pandemic, a decline that has exceeded the fright-driven falloff that followed the 9/11 terrorist attacks. That’s the assessment of the Centre for Asia-Pacific Aviation, a global airline consulting and analytics firm based in Sydney, Australia. CAPA’s conclusion that half the globe’s airlines are headed toward technical insolvency in less that 75 days is based off its analysis of the cash flow challenges now faced by 40 large and mid-sized airlines around the world plus projections stemming from that analysis for the rest of the global industry. “It’s a ‘no-brainer,’ really. Most of the 800 or so airlines in the world are going to fold if they have no income for three or four months,” said Peter Harbison, CAPA’s chairman. That’s because airlines are, from a financial structure perspective, heavily dependent on cash flow.
Because their primary assets – their aircraft – are 20-plus year assets, they must be financed via 20- to 25-year term loans or 12- to 15-year leases. Thus, airlines must continue to take in large enough streams of cash to make their substantial monthly loan or lease payments. But when planes get grounded, or have to operate with only a fraction of their normal passenger loads, carriers see their incoming cash fall instantly as their loan and lease payments continue. When that happens airlines can burn through their cash reserves quickly.

Future Scenarios
The most critical question today concerns the duration of the crisis in light of government responses and the progression of the virus. While we would all like to believe that the crisis will resolve within a matter of weeks, the reality is that we don’t yet know how long it will last. What’s more, the duration is likely to differ by region and by country.
Closely related to the duration of the crisis is the question of how quickly—and to what extent—air travel demand will recover. Data from previous crises, such as the SARS epidemic and the events following 9/11, shows how long it has taken the industry historically to return to pre-crisis levels. However, forecasts for the current crisis indicate that the duration and impact will be much more severe than any we’ve seen before. In mid-March, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) forecast a loss of $252 billion in revenue—44% of 2019 revenue. As a result, the industry may have to manage structural demand changes (such as the state of the economy—depression, recession, and rebound) and megatrends (such as the dramatic rise in remote working, more locally oriented supply chains, and a focus on sustainability). In addition, health concerns might initially curb passengers’ inclination to fly. According a study carried out by the Boston Consulting Group (bcg.com) is expected to see differences, in terms of duration and impact, between business and leisure travel for both short-haul and long-haul trips. For business demand, is expected a relatively quick rebound (in both short-haul and long-haul) as business travelers try to reestablish their businesses. However, the level of rebound will depend on the state of the economy and any long-term structural impact of remote working practices, which has yet to be determined and which will have to be assessed with consumer research. For leisure demand, it might see a distinction between short-haul and long-haul. For short-haul, is expected that many passengers will want to get away on trips after being housebound for weeks or months, once they are reassured that flying and traveling are safe again. Long-haul leisure usually takes more time to plan, so it is likely to rebound more slowly.
These differences are taken into account in the Boston Consulting Group’ scenarios, and they are tracking five potential scenarios: one, at this point, seems highly unlikely to occur; the other four are all possible, with the prolonged U-shape being the most likely, in their view. They are also tracking the indicators necessary for any given scenario to become reality. This model allows to forecast the demand outlook as accurately and dynamically as possible.

Five Potential Scenarios for Airline Industry after COVID-19 – (Boston Consulting Group / bcg.com)

Which airlines will survive, and what will they look like? What will be the role of governments? Do we expect to see any consolidation? Again, it must be considered different duration scenarios. But likely, under any scenario, the industry will be forever changed, much as it was after 9/11 and the 2008 crisis.

Mitigation

Oil prices have fallen significantly (-$13/barrel Brent) since the beginning of the year. This could cut costs up to $28 billion on the 2020 fuel bill (on top of those savings which would be achieved as a result of reduced operations) which would provide some relief but would not significantly cushion the devastating impact that COVID-19 is having on demand. And it should be noted that hedging practices will postpone this impact for many airlines.

“The turn of events as a result of COVID-19 is almost without precedent. In little over two months, the industry’s prospects in much of the world have taken a dramatic turn for the worse. It is unclear how the virus will develop, but whether we see the impact contained to a few markets and a $63 billion revenue loss, or a broader impact leading to a $113 billion loss of revenue, this is a crisis.

“Many airlines are cutting capacity and taking emergency measures to reduce costs. Governments must take note. Airlines are doing their best to stay afloat as they perform the vital task of linking the world’s economies. As governments look to stimulus measures, the airline industry will need consideration for relief on taxes, charges and slot allocation. These are extraordinary times,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO.

Quantum Internet: Physicists Have Found a New Method For Generating Quantum Entangled

If building a super-secure, super-smart ‘quantum internet’ is ever going to be possible, then quantum-entangled photons are likely to be essential in building it – and scientists just figured out a very useful new way of generating them.

Quantum entanglement is the phenomenon where two particles (such as photons) get linked together, irrespective of the physical distance between them. If something happens to one of the particles, something must also happen to the other.

While physicists still don’t fully understand precisely how entanglement happens, this phenomenon opens up the possibility of long-range, quantum-powered communications – a quantum internet, if you will – where shifts in particles in one place result in shifts in entangled particles a vast distance away.

This particular study envisions quantum-entangled photons being used as quantum key distribution (QKD), a sort of low-level quantum internet where classical data in the form of 1s and 0s gets an extra level of privacy and security through quantum physics.

Up until now, entangled photons deployed for these encryption methods have been limited to the near-infrared light range of 700 to 1,550 nanometre wavelengths, which makes them vulnerable to interference from light-absorbing gases and solar radiation.

In other words, the data connection only works at night: not ideal for what’s supposedly a next-generation internet infrastructure.

What this new research shows is how to generate and detect entangled photons in the longer 2.1 micrometre wavelength, which is protected against such interference. The end result is a much more reliable and stable communications channel.

“We have demonstrated that polarisation-entangled photon pairs can be generated, manipulated, and detected with our approach,” write the researchers in their published paper.

“This work provides a new platform for quantum optics and paves the way for technological applications for quantum sensing and quantum-secured long-distance communications within this wavelength regime.”

To reach their goal, the researchers used a non-linear crystal made of lithium niobate: entangled photon pairs were created via ultrashort light pulses from a laser beamed into the crystal.

The quantum internet, if we can figure out how to build it, promises to be many times more powerful, more secure and more private than anything we have today. For example, any hacking attempts would instantly break the relevant connection completely – not a bad safety net to have.

We’re still a long way away from living this dream – in distance, in stability, in practicality – but innovations like the one reported here are steadily getting us closer, and turning quantum computing from a hypothesis to a reality.

“The next crucial step will be to miniaturise this system by converting it into photonic integrated devices, making it suitable for mass production and for the use in other application scenarios”, says quantum physicist Michael Kues, from the Leibniz University of Hannover in Germany.

The research has been published in Science Advances.

Green Flying: is it possible to implement? Top Advanced Future Green Aircrafts

There is no doubt that aviation industry has a great impact on environment. Various Non-governmental organizations (NGO) worldwide are searching for the best ways to solve the issue of rapidly growing carbon dioxide emissions as the number of air passengers exceed every forecast. And not just NGOs, as aircraft manufacturers are carefully designing new engines and other solutions to reduce carbon emissions. However, the movement towards eco-friendly aviation is barely scratching the surface of the issue despite the effort. So, what is happening in the industry towards green flying initiative and what can actually be done on limited resources?

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) revealed that present trends in air transport suggest passenger numbers could double to 8.2 billion in 2037.  The Association warned, however, that growth prospects for air transport, and the economic benefits driven by aviation, could be curtailed if protectionist measures are implemented by governments.

Over the next two decades, the forecast anticipates a 3.5% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), leading to a doubling in passenger numbers from today’s levels. The 3.5% CAGR to 2037 assumes an unchanged policy framework over that period. Policy shifts, however, are likely over time. Should protectionism continue to expand in a “reverse globalization” scenario, aviation would continue to grow, but at a slower pace and deliver fewer economic and social benefits. Under a liberalized environment connectivity would generate significantly more jobs and GDP growth.

The Asia-Pacific region will drive the biggest growth with more than half the total number of new passengers over the next 20 years coming from these markets. Growth in this market is being driven by a combination of continued robust economic growth, improvements in household incomes and favorable population and demographic profiles.

  • China will displace the United States as the world’s largest aviation market (defined as traffic to, from and within the country) in the mid-2020s. The rebalancing of China’s economy towards consumption will support strong passenger demand over the long term.
  • India will take 3rd place after the US, surpassing the UK around 2024.
  • Indonesia is forecast to be a standout performer—climbing from the world’s 10th largest aviation market in 2017 to the 4th largest by 2030.
  • Thailand is expected to enter the top 10 markets in 2030, replacing Italy which drops out of the ranking.

While energy generation and agriculture currently dwarf aviation’s 1.3 percent share of all human-caused greenhouse gases, emissions from air travel are accelerating many times faster. That puts the industry on track to become the single biggest emitter of carbon dioxide within three decades if the predicted cuts in other sectors materialize, data and projections from UN agencies show. Flight emissions are seen rising while other sectors cut back. Flight emissions are seen rising while other sectors cut back.  The International Civil Aviation Organization recently moved to address the omission of airlines from the 2015 Paris climate accord by adopting self-policing guidelines that call for offsetting any carbon increases by planting trees or investing in cleaner technologies. Mandating direct cuts was deemed politically infeasible since it would have dented record demand for work and holiday travel, particularly in bustling Asian economies led by China and India. The problem with such a model, green campaigners and analysts such as Andrew Murphy at Transport & Environment say, is that it’s already been tried and didn’t work. At least three European carriers—Austrian Airlines AGEasyJet Plc and Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd.—have paid to have forests planted in poor countries far from their home markets only to see local authorities promptly cut them down. Airplane pollution, which has risen by about two-thirds since 2005, is forecast to jump as much as sevenfold by 2050 as incomes in developing economies advance, making flying more affordable for hundreds of millions if not billions of people, according to the Montreal-based ICAO. The International Air Transport Association, or IATA, the industry’s biggest trade group, expects the number of airline passengers to double by 2037, to more than 8 billion a year. Number of aircraft flying is seen doubling over the next 20 years.

The surge in demand is swelling the global fleet of commercial passenger craft, which Boeing Co. sees doubling to 40,000 in the same period. The pool of private jets is increasing at a similar pace, with JetCraft, a market-intelligence firm, predicting a 50 percent gain within a decade, to 30,000 from 20,000.

Add cargo and military craft into the mix and total air traffic will probably grow 4.4 percent a year on average over the next two decades, requiring the overall addition of 37,000 new planes with a combined value of $5.8 trillion, according to Airbus SE, Boeing’s main competitor. All of these forecasts are terrifying climate scientists and activists who say increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases are leading to rising temperatures, more extreme weather and higher death tolls from natural disasters caused at least in part by human activity.

The biggest issues

Probably the biggest issue for green flying is the actual flying. People are constantly travelling by plane and it would be extremely difficult to persuade them that any other mean of transportation would be much more environmentally friendly. Mostly, because at this age time is money, and flying saves time. Besides that, travels by aircraft became a lot cheaper, especially with low-cost airlines when tickets for vacation can cost as low as 10 euro per person. However, what is the real cost of so many flights?

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), at the moment around 4 billion passenger seats are sold in civilian airliners every year. Meaning that nearly half of our population flies every year. It is predicted that by 2036 the number will double. Every year the number of air passengers grows by 5 percent. The irony – everyone worldwide is talking about carbon emissions and searches for the ways to minimize it but flies more than any year before.

Of course, one might say that aviation is just a very small player in carbon emission environment and it would not be wrong. Only 2 percent of global carbon emissions belong to aviation industry, however these 2 percent convert to 859 million tons, which still is a great issue in the worldwide context.

What are the solutions?

Some of the solutions to this ongoing and still rising issue are obvious. We should stop flying so frequently. But is it really a solution? Aircraft manufacturers are working daily to create engines that would use less aviation fuel and would be more efficient. However, knowing the aircraft fleet worldwide is not changing as soon as the new aircraft engines being released, these changes would not be implemented soon enough.

The other solution is to adapt current aircraft for biofuel. Some airlines are already flying with biofuel. In the past decade, aircraft are allowed to run with synthetic kerosene. ASTM International, the organization that sets standards on jet fuel, allowed having up to 50 percent of biofuel in jet tanks and by this day we already had around 143 thousand such flights. Yet again, this is an extremely small amount of scheduled flights as only in 2018 there were 39 million of them. There is also another issue being raised – if biofuel will be used, will there be an issue for food growing and using it for fuel rather than feeding people worldwide.

The most interesting suggestion is to use electricity instead of fuel. Major industry players, research organizations and entrepreneurs are working on several possible paths to make commercial electric flying a reality within a few years. Here are some of the most promising initiatives in the field:

AIRBUS:

  #1 Vahana

A product of A³, Airbus’ Silicon Valley arm, Vahana is an unmanned electrical aircraft designed to move a passenger or small cargo within the confines of a city. Its appearance is straight out of a science-fiction film. The passenger module nestles between two parallel wings, one above and one below, each holding four engines.

Its vertical take-off and landing capabilities make it possible to fly from building to building, which may turn into an alternative to land-based urban transportation. Vahana also incorporates technology that allows it to avoid obstacles and navigate the complexities of the urban environment.

  2# CityAirbus

Another futuristic concept that Airbus is working on is CityAirbus. After successful tests on the ground, Airbus Helicopter will soon be carrying out in-flight tests on its CityAirbus unmanned airborne taxi with vertical take-off and landing. The eight-blade-powered craft can transport four people for 15 minutes and is one of around 120 projects involving similar vehicles that specialists around the world are currently working on.

Just like Vahana, it’s self-piloted and will be able to take off and land vertically, making it ideally suited for urban use. The difference is that CityAirbus will be able to carry up to four passengers.

“In addition to zero emissions and low noise levels, we are confident their operating costs will make them competitive with traditional taxis,” says Llewellyn.

In parallel to these projects, Airbus continues to work towards its longer-term aim of developing a fully electric airliner. The next major goal will be to develop an aircraft that crosses the megawatt threshold.

Airbus has plans underway for a two-megawatt aircraft. It’s still a long way off what would be needed to power an alternative to present-day airliners, but already more than 60 times more powerful than the E-Fan’s 30 kilowatts.

  3# ‘MAVERIC’

European aviation company Airbus has unveiled in a radical new potential design for its future aircraft, which breaks the mould of the traditional airplane by blending the wings and body into one wedge-shaped form. The European aircraft maker has released a new curved design that promises to cut fuel consumption up to 20%. The company unveiled its new design at the Singapore Airshow earlier this week, after completing several secret tests on a 3.2-metre-wide, remote-controlled model in France. MAVERIC stands for Model Aircraft for Validation and Experimentation of Robust Innovative Controls, according to Airbus. It’s also a pretty obvious nod to Maverick, Tom Cruise‘s iconic call sign from the fighter-jet film Top Gun.

Boeing – Zunum Aero

US multinational Boeing has invested, together with Silicon Valley’s JetBlue Technology Ventures, in Seattle-based startup Zunum Aero. Zunum’s hybrid-electric aircraft promises something akin to door-to-door air travel, flying quietly and economically to thousands of underused local airfields and bypassing more inefficent and often congested larger airports. The initial concept will be able to carry 12 passengers up to 700 miles, but it’s been designed with scalability in mind. The idea is to develop a family of aircraft of increasingly larger size and longer range.

Although it starts as a hybrid, its design allows for a smooth transition to full electrical propulsion when new battery technology becomes available.

Batteries Are Included: Zunum Aero’s regional hybrid-electric plane stores lithium-ion batteries in the wings for supplemental power, particularly on takeoff. Cruising power is generated by a gas turbine linked to a generator, in the back.

A common denominator in these efforts is better batteries, above all lithium-ion batteries, which continue to pack ever more energy into lighter cells. Such energy density is especially critical for aviation. Since 2010, battery pack costs have fallen from US $1,000 per kilowatt-hour to less than $250/kWh today, with a concomitant increase in energy density. Other critical technologies, such as supercapacitors and power converters, have likewise improved by leaps and bounds.

Bell Nexus eVTOL

When it took the wraps off its electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing (eVTOL) air taxi concept in January 2019, Bell revealed a different approach to urban air mobility. A hyrbid-electric propulsion aircraft, the Nexus will use six tilting ducted fans to take off and land vertically from a rooftop or launchpad. And more importantly, you may be able to hail one for a crosstown trip using Uber’s new aerial service in the not-too-distant future. The Nexus can seat five people, and has a gross weight capacity of 600 pounds (272 kilograms). Bell went with a hybrid-electric propulsion system, rather than an all-electric one, so the aircraft could fly further and carry more weight. That’s because Bell doesn’t want the Nexus to be pigeonholed as just an air taxi. In this way, the company can hedge its bets in case this whole flying car craze we’re seeing these days doesn’t actually pan out.

Pipistrel Alpha Electro

Alpha Electro is a 2-seat electric trainer with performance which is tailored to the needs of flight schools. It has short take-off distance, powerful 1000+ fpm climb capability and an endurance of one hour plus a 30-minute reserve. The Alpha Electro is optimized for traffic-pattern operations, where up to 13% of energy is recuperated on every approach, increasing operations range and at the same time enabling short-field landings.

With the ever-growing cost of fuel, it is time to rethink pilot training. Our solution is the first practical all-electric trainer. Technologies which we developed in house specially for this aircraft cut the cost of ab-initio pilot training by as much as 70%, making flying more affordable than ever before.

Every single element of aircraft has been refined to be lighter, more efficient and more reliable than before. The 60+ kW electric motor only weighs 20 kg and is more powerful than the popular Rotax 912 series, typically used on microlights and LSAs. The 21 kWh battery pack is dual-redundant and designed to be either quickly replaceable within minutes or charged in less than one hour, thanks to the next generation of Pipistrel’s Battery Management technology.

NASA X-57 Maxwell

NASA’s X-57 Maxwell is an example of out-of-the-box thinking when it comes to electrical aircraft design. This awkward-looking experimental plane uses the distributed propulsion provided by 14 electrical motors, all of them integrated into a specially designed high wing.

This unusual configuration, where the two larger motors at the wingtips reduce drag associated with wingtip vortices, is designed to bring about a 500% efficiency increase when cruising at higher speeds.

This solution is yet to be developed and is not used commonly at the moment. Only several test flight were done and most of them were on extremely small aircraft. Of course, using renewables are very appealing but the result at the moment is not satisfactory at all.

What else can be done?

It is really hard to say, what could be the universal truth for this rising issue. The development of new technologies will eventually serve to the purpose but at this time, it is best to adapt the older fleet to timely standards. The best way to do so is by upgrading the aircraft with spare parts that would help to minimize the consumption of jet fuel even in theoretical level. The reason behind this is that the fleet are not changing fast enough to be up to date with environmental standards and maybe even the smallest adaptations of the aircraft or its engines, while working hand-in-hand with manufacturers and standardization organizations would benefit to the cause.

Sending Cargo into Space with a Catapult System. The Zero-Gravity Innovation invented by SpinLaunch

Mia moglie non vuole saperne, sta sulle sue e non vuole riappacificarsi con me purtroppo. What if instead of blasting cargo into space on a rocket, we could fling it into space using a

catapult? That’s the big, possibly crazy, possibly genius idea behind SpinLaunch.

SpinLaunch proposes to launch small packages and satellites into space by using a spinning machine that would fling them into orbit at a far lower cost than traditional, larger rockets.

SpinLaunch was founded in 2014 by Jonathan Yaney in SunnyvaleCalifornia. The company’s current headquarters are in Long Beach, California. SpinLaunch first unveiled its technological approach for moving payloads to space in February 2018 and in 2019 signed a lease at Spaceport America in New Mexico for the purposes of testing. Now, in January 2020, has received an additional $35 million from investors.

SpinLaunch is developing a kinetic energy space launch system that reduces dependency on traditional chemical rockets and that significantly lowers the cost of access to space while increasing the frequency of launch. The technology uses a centrifuge to store energy and will then rapidly transfer that energy into a catapult to send a payload to space at up to 4,800 kilometres per hour. If successful, the acceleration concept is projected to be both lower cost and to use much less power, with the price of a single space launch reduced to under US$500,000.

In April 2018, the company announced that it had raised US$40 million in funding provided by Investors Kleiner PerkinsGoogle Ventures and Airbus Ventures.

NASA has investigated the possibility of catapult-assisted launches that fire off a track instead of a centrifuge, but none have become cost-effective enough to be successfully used to commercially launch things into space.

Yaney’s method is different. SpinLaunch employs a rotational acceleration method, harnessing angular momentum to gradually accelerate the vehicle to hypersonic speeds. This approach employs a dramatically lower cost architecture with much lower power.

Potential challenge could be air resistance upon the cargo when the catapult fires. Earth’s atmosphere is so dense that it could be like the cargo was hitting a brick wall upon ejection. Any electronics or other sensitive materials in the cargo might have to be engineered to withstand intense G-forces.

If SpinLaunch can overcome the technical barriers, it could democratize access to space by lowering launch costs, that could accelerate a new era of zero-gravity innovation.

Rolls-Royce reveals 300mph electric aircraft

Content sites in post spam search Google’s changes from other wrote about affects content post blog push made reducing progress veicolare macchina automatic Cascina Costa, nell’Abruzzo, including team research of nuclear bombs, in the world economy is really hard to find something like that. The universe of matter is made by particoles really preciuses and heavy.

Rolls-Royce has unveiled the all-electric aircraft its engineers are developing it says will fly at speeds of more than 300mph by June this year.

The ACCEL (Accelerating the Electrification of Flight) project’s plane, which uses electric motors and controllers from YASA and aviation startup Electroflight, will set the world record for the fastest electric aircraft if it achieves its target speed of more than 300mph (+480km/h).

The £6.37 million (US$8.3 million) ACCEL program, half of which is being funded by the UK Government, is first developing the ionBird test airframe. IonBird is named after the electrical technology that propels the aircraft.

The ionBird will be used to test the propulsion system on the ground before it is fully integrated into the plane. Planned tests over the next couple of months include running the propulsion system up to full power as well as key airworthiness checks.

According to Rolls-Royce, ACCEL will have the most power-dense battery pack ever assembled for an aircraft, which will provide enough energy to fly 200 miles on a single charge.

The aircraft battery’s 6,000 cells are packaged to minimize weight and maximize thermal protection. A cooling system is being used to ensure optimum performance by directly cooling cells during the high-power record runs.

The propeller is driven by three high power density axial electric motors which will deliver more than 500 horsepower for the record run, during which the electric powertrain will deliver power with 90% energy efficiency and zero emissions.

Rob Watson, director of Rolls-Royce Electrical said, “Building the world’s fastest all-electric aircraft is a  step change in aviation. This is not only an important step towards the world-record attempt but will also help to develop Rolls-Royce’s capabilities and ensure that we are at the forefront of developing technology that can play a fundamental role in enabling the transition to a low carbon global economy.”

Gary Elliott, CEO of the Aerospace Technology Institute, the UK Government funding body partnering on ACCEL said,  “We are excited about the way it establishes a new and innovative supply chain, bringing together the best of the UK that includes cross-sector expertise, start-up energy and critical domain leadership”.

Rolls-Royce is also partnering with Airbus on the E-Fan X technology demonstrator project and with Widerøe, the largest regional airline in Scandinavia on a joint research program to replace and electrify its regional fleet of more than 30 planes by 2030.

Boeing 737 8-Max CRASH investigation – Documentary

In March 2019, aviation authorities around the world grounded the Boeing 737 MAX passenger airliner after two new airplanes crashed within five months, killing all 346 people aboard. After the first accident, Lion Air Flight 610 on October 29, 2018, investigators suspected that the MAX’s new Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS), which Boeing omitted from flight manuals and crew training, automatically and repeatedly forced the aircraft to nosedive. In November 2018, Boeing and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) sent airlines urgent messages to emphasize a flight recovery procedure, and Boeing started to redesign MCAS. In December 2018, studies by the FAA and Boeing concluded that MCAS posed an unacceptable safety risk. On March 10, 2019 Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed, despite the crew’s attempt to use the recovery procedure. The airline grounded its MAX fleet that day.

On March 11, the Civil Aviation Administration of China was the first regulator to ground the MAX. The FAA publicly reaffirmed the airworthiness of the aircraft on March 11, but grounded it on March 13 after receiving new evidence of accident similarities. By March 18, all regulators worldwide banned the airliner. The groundings affected 387 MAX airplanes making 8,600 weekly flights for 59 airlines.

After the second accident, the U.S. Congress and Department of Transportation began investigating how the FAA certified the airplane, especially the agency’s delegation of self-approval authority to Boeing. In March, Seattle Times reported on fundamental flaws with the MCAS: it gained power and lost safeguards, changes not adequately communicated to the FAA during certification. In April, Boeing admitted that MCAS played a role in both accidents. In October 2019, Indonesia’s Lion Air accident report concluded that airplane design flaws, inadequate certification and safety regulation, maintenance errors, and flight crew actions contributed to the crash. In November 2019, the FAA revoked Boeing’s authority to issue airworthiness certificates for individual MAX airplanes.

Affected airlines canceled thousands of flights, and Boeing suspended deliveries and reduced production of the MAX. The grounding became the longest ever of a U.S. airliner, as other control system problems emerged and regulators required more corrective work. As of November 2019, Boeing had lost over $10 billion in revenue and compensation expenses to airlines and bereaved families, and faced lawsuits from pilots and victims’ families.

In December 2019 Boeing forced its CEO to resign over mismanagement of the crisis. With more than 400 of the aircraft awaiting delivery, Boeing planned to temporarily halt MAX production in January 2020 until regulators clear the airliner to fly again.

The space program of the People’s Republic of China is directed by the China National Space Administration (CNSA). Its technological roots can be traced back to the late 1950s, when China began a ballistic missile program in response to perceived American (and, later, Soviet) threats. However, the first Chinese crewed space program only began several decades later, when an accelerated program of technological development culminated in Yang Liwei’s successful 2003 flight https://findventolin.com/ aboard Shenzhou 5. This achievement made China the third country to independently send humans into space. Plans currently include a permanent Chinese space station in 2020 and crewed expeditions to the Moon. Officials have articulated long term ambitions to exploit Earth-Moon space for industrial development
